I dunno if it was supposed to be easy for me to find the video, but I had to dig for it. So here it is, video
Not sure what to think of it, I really haven't been paying enough attention to the media coverage to know. Sorry for the .wmv format, it was all I could find.
I hadn't seen it before. I hate that TV is set up to be scripted and not allow anyone to express their real opinions. Some of the coverage definitely has been like he said. White people "find" food, black people "loot" food.
I can't believe that anyone would let other die because of racism though. I mean, i'm sure such people exist, but the relief effort is so widespread that I doubt one person could hold it up.
i don't know if its so much letting people die as it is turning a blind eye and thinking of it as "not my problem" when it is clearly everyone's problem. and it's especially the problem of a president whose number one campaign promise was to keep everyone safe. as keith olbermann said:
Good article. I think part of the problem with New Orleans was that everyone thought it was fine right after the hurricane. It was only a day or so later that the flooding happened. That's no excuse for inaction, but I can't understand why nothing seemed to be done right away. An emergency like this should have an automatic response, but I'm not sure who that falls on.
When this is all over I think it will be far worse than anyone expected. I've heard that FEMA is ordering photographers not to take pictures of the bodies, but at some point it'll become clear what all has happened. Even at the Superdome where people were supposed to be safe the conditions were horrible. I just can't fathom how many people died in places that were supposed to be safe during a disaster.
I tend to blame the preparation more than the response. It seems like no matter how quick the response was it just wasn't ready to deal with something like this. This was completely preventable and it seems no one cared enough to prevent it.
the rumors of murdered babies and child rapes have so far proven unfounded, thankfully. tons of people are here in atlanta, and also in tuscaloosa i've heard, and a number of other places. unfortunately, mississippi is being overlooked, as new orleans has gotten the bulk of the attention. true, new orleans probably got the worst of the storm, but mississippi is suffering, too, and yet aide keeps going past them to nawlins. i want to hear a jazz dirge.
Clearly it is the State Government's problem first. And how can it be "especially" the problem of a president whose promise was to keep everyone safe? I sure as hell don't remember any president who said, "well I'll keep taxes low, but you'd better invest in that Smith & Wesson for your home security." People were simply waiting to blame Bush as soon as it was forecasted that New Orleans would be hit. Why don't you blame someone for building a city in a bowl below sea level? Or the governors of Louisiana or the mayors of New Orleans in the past for not properly protecting the city with levees? Even if Bush's #1 campaign promise would have been to build levees to protect New Orleans from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, it would not have been done by now.
"Why don't you blame someone for building a city in a bowl below sea level?" -as was most expertly put on the daily show tonight: blame the city... for existing?
"Or the governors of Louisiana or the mayors of New Orleans in the past for not properly protecting the city with levees?" -louisiana had made it very clear that the levees were in dire need of repair. they lobbied to get the money to shore up the walls and offered expert testimony that one big flood would break down the levee system, but the government (both parties) kept denying more funding AND cutting the funding that was already in place.
i'm not blaming bush for the levee disaster. i just think it's shit that an administration that promised mass protection and swift relief was not able to keep even a minimal portion of those promises, when it came to saving and helping poor people, until 5 whole days after the fact. they didn't even have WATER for the people they did save. shouldn't there AT LEAST be trucks of potable water at the ready?!?! for a terrorist attack!? aren't we at a permanent yellow?

"[M]ost chillingly of all, this is the Law and Order and Terror government. It promised protection — or at least amelioration — against all threats: conventional, radiological, or biological. It has just proved that it cannot save its citizens from a biological weapon called standing water."
